Lower Grouse Mountain Erosion Management ProjectLower Grouse Mountain Erosion Management Project

Mackay and Grouse Creeks are located in Grouse Mountain Neglected Park and Capilano Watershed on the North Shore. Both the park and the watershed are managed by Metro Vancouver.

Metro Vancouver conducts routine surveys and assessments of its land to monitor and understand conditions. Studies have shown that there is a potential for a debris flow in these two creeks that could reach the Grouse Mountain Resort parking areas, putting people and vehicles at risk. Geological experts have been hired to design protection measures to help ensure people and vehicles in the parking lots would not be harmed by a debris flow.

The project includes:

preparing the east and west work areas which includes some tree falling to provide a safe work area and a space to install the protection measures

installing two flexible metal nets above Parking Lot A that would capture flowing debris (see west work area on map)

creating a raised bank above the Lot D overflow parking area that would catch debris (see east work area on map)

closing a small portion of Grouse Mountain Resort’s Parking Lot A during winter months when there is an increased risk of debris flow (see parking lot project area on map)
