Metro Vancouver Lowers Tipping Fees For Large Waste Loads Metro Vancouver Lowers Tipping Fees For Large Waste Loads

Increasingly, commercial waste haulers are bypassing our regional facilities and avoiding Metro Vancouver's disposal bans and tipping fees, which help us to achieve our aggressive waste reduction and recycling goals. We adjusted the tipping fee structure to encourage waste haulers to deliver their garbage to regional facilities.

Disposal bans are a critical tool in encouraging diversion of recyclable materials and reducing waste. They are enforced when garbage is inspected at Metro Vancouver facilities. And, disposal bans play an important role in helping us achieve among the highest recycling rates in North America.

In December, 19,000 tonnes of garbage were transported out of the region, a 60-per-cent increase from December 2013. And in January 2015, quantities continued to grow compared to 2014. Despite a low Canadian dollar, commercial haulers have continued to send large volumes of garbage outside of the region.

As of April 6, 2015, there will no longer be a universal $109-per-tonne tipping fee, and rates will vary based on load sizes. The new fees will be:

Large loads exceeding nine tonnes: $80 per tonne.

Medium loads between one and nine tonnes: $109 per tonne to a maximum load fee of $720.

Small loads up to one tonne: $130 per tonne and a maximum load fee of $109.

A transaction fee of $5 applied to all loads to contribute to fixed costs associated with managing each load including weigh scales, maintenance and requirements of the tipping floor where garbage is dumped, and staffing costs.

The minimum cost for small loads will be $15 up from $10 per load, and the average charge per trip for a small vehicle is estimated at $31 from $22, including a $5 transaction fee.

All loads to the Matsqui Transfer Station in Abbotsford: $150 per tonne.

Loads under 1 tonne comprise 85 percent of all trips to our regional waste management facilities, and cost more to manage than larger loads. Therefore, the rate has been adjusted to be more consistent with the cost of managing these loads, and the increases are not expected to cause additional illegal dumping.

We know that Metro Vancouver residents and businesses are committed to recycling, and these measures are a first step in managing the flow of waste out of our region. We hope that commercial haulers will pass on the savings from reduced tipping fees to their customers.

http://heimat-deutschland.info/metroupdate/PublishingImages/a6-sw.jpg2015-02-26T08:00:00ZGP0|#52401d1f-e9cf-4238-83ee-d36a1e035119;L0|#052401d1f-e9cf-4238-83ee-d36a1e035119|Issue 6;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

In order to better reflect the costs of service delivery, the Metro Vancouver Board has revised the tipping fees at all regional waste disposal facilities.
