Upgrades to Iona Island Wastewater Treatment PlantUpgrades to Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant

In order to continue to provide effective and reliable service until then, an upgrade to the solids handling processes is required.

The area serviced by the plant has a large number of combined sewers, resulting in a significant amount of storm water from road drainage being treated at the plant. The facility becomes stressed when large amounts of liquid waste flow into the plant and are washed through the treatment system and eventually into the sludge digesters, necessitating these upgrades.

The Solids Handling Upgrades project, which started this summer and is expected to be complete in early 2017, will add screening and de-gritting equipment to remove more of the sand and debris from the liquid waste stream. The project will also improve the performance of digester mixing systems in the facility’s four digesters by replacing the old gas-mixing system with new pumped systems. This improvement will help improve digester gas production that will generate electricity and heat for the plant.

http://heimat-deutschland.info/metroupdate/PublishingImages/Issue5-a6.jpg2015-01-01T08:00:00ZGP0|#08524215-2a3b-4829-9825-f56a6017495c;L0|#008524215-2a3b-4829-9825-f56a6017495c|Issue 5;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

The 50-year-old Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant provides primary liquid waste treatment to most of Vancouver, UBC, the University Endowment Lands, and small areas in Burnaby and Richmond where the plant is located. To comply with new federal regulations, it is scheduled to undergo a major upgrade to secondary treatment by 2030.
