Welcomehttp://heimat-deutschland.info/metroupdate/issue-46/641/WelcomeWelcome

Welcome back! Fall is here, the air is clear and B.C. is in the throes of municipal election campaigning. Here at Metro Vancouver, though, it's business as usual, after another hot summer brought a raft of air quality advisories due to local and wildfire smoke. Looks like this is becoming a trend and our air quality team continues to adjust their advisory procedures, especially in light of climate change.

We have several projects on the go, including construction of the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant, planning for the Iona Wastewater Treatment Plant and using drones to look at the regeneration of peat in Burns Bog. Speaking of wastewater, it's that time of year again for our annual Wipe It Green Bin It campaign, which reminds residents not to pour grease down the drains because it can cause costly blockages in our sewer pipes. Please keep this in mind, especially with Thanksgiving just around the corner.

Other interesting notes from around the region: Metro Vancouver residents are dropping off more reusable goods such as books and used clothing at the region's transfer stations, Tsawwassen First Nation youth got a tour of the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant and we have handed out more cultural grants to support arts and culture in the region.

Staff also got to hear a fascinating presentation on the effects of residential schools by Phyllis Webstad, who shared her story at a recent Lunch and Learn. Webstad was instrumental in helping to launch Orange Shirt Day, which is coming up on September 30 so hope to see a sea of orange out there!

And on a national scale, the Circular Economy Leadership Coalition – the National Zero Waste Council is a founding partner – was announced at the G7 Environment Ministers meeting in Halifax by Catherine McKenna, Minister for Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Metro Vancouver is a federation of 21 municipalities, one Electoral Area and one Treaty First Nation that collaboratively plans for and delivers regional-scale services. Its core services are drinking water, wastewater treatment and solid waste management. Metro Vancouver also regulates air quality, plans for urban growth, manages a regional parks system and provides affordable housing.

Read more...Welcome0 0
