Measuring Air Quality in Lions BayMeasuring Air Quality in Lions Bay

Air monitoring study conducted in Lions Bay in the winter of 2015/2016 found air quality in that area was generally better than at other air quality monitoring stations in the Lower Fraser Valley, according to recently published results.

Metro Vancouver provides air quality monitoring services in municipalities across the region and the goal of this study was to assess how air quality in Lions Bay is affected by various sources of emissions in the area.

During the study, higher levels of fine particles were measured for short periods. The timing and patterns of the air quality measurements suggested that wood smoke, likely from residential wood burning, and traffic were the main sources of these fine particles. Clean air initiatives, such as the Metro Vancouver Wood Stove Exchange Program and the Emotive electric vehicle campaign, aim to reduce emissions from these key sources.

The monitoring study used state-of-the-art equipment based in the Mobile Air Monitoring Unit (MAMU) to measure levels of air pollutants and meteorology. The MAMU was located at Lions Bay Community School. The full study can be found here.

Metro Vancouver operates a permanent air quality monitoring station in Horseshoe Bay as part of our regional air quality monitoring network of 29 stations. This station provides information about air quality in the northwestern part of the region, including communities at the southern end of Howe Sound. Air quality and weather information from Horseshoe Bay is reported on Metro Vancouver’s real-time web-based app, www.airmap.ca.

http://heimat-deutschland.info/metroupdate/PublishingImages/issue31-mamu.jpg2017-04-27T07:00:00ZGP0|#ad5ec508-afdc-4c33-bc6a-878b23de7ea8;L0|#0ad5ec508-afdc-4c33-bc6a-878b23de7ea8|Issue 31;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

Air monitoring study conducted in Lions Bay in the winter of 2015/2016 found air quality in that area was generally better than at other air quality monitoring stations in the Lower Fraser Valley, according to recently published results.

0
