Music performance in Break Head Tank up for JunoMusic performance in Break Head Tank up for Juno

On a chilly October morning in 2014, nine musicians gathered in the Works Yard at Capilano Watershed in North Vancouver and donned hard hats, safety vests and steel toe boots ahead of their performance in the underground Break Head Tank.

The performance was unique. The Metro Vancouver video crew documenting the construction process of the Seymour-Capilano Filtration Project, one of the largest water infrastructure projects in the world, had been struck by the remarkable acoustics inside the Break Head Tank during a site visit.

This inspired a collaboration with local composer Jordan Nobles to create a musical work for performance in the tank -- an enormous underground bunker that connects seven kilometres of water tunnels between the Capilano Reservoir and Seymour-Capilano Filtration plant -- before it was permanently filled with three million litres of water.

Nobles’ piece, titled Immersion, is nominated as ‘Classical Composition of the Year’ for the 2017 Juno Awards, which air on April 2. The video featuring the four-part, 27-minute suite was shot in one day, recorded in four single takes, without any overdubs, edits, or audio effects. The piece was showcased at a March 22, 2016 screening of Sounds from the Break Head Tank accompanying the documentary, Building the Twin Tunnels in an evening at the Kay Meek Centre in West Vancouver.
Video of Sounds from the Breakhead Tank, Immersion

Juno Awards nomination

http://heimat-deutschland.info/metroupdate/PublishingImages/mu30-breakheadtank.jpg2017-03-30T07:00:00ZGP0|#4bfff573-f035-496d-a2db-b90f29d95f52;L0|#04bfff573-f035-496d-a2db-b90f29d95f52|Issue 30;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

Local composer Jordan Nobles' musical work, Immersion, which was recorded in the Break Head Tank at the Seymour-Capilano Filtration Project, has been nominated as 'Classical Composition of the Year' for the 2017 Juno Awards, which air on April 2.

0
