Wastewater pump station power back-up initiativeWastewater pump station power back-up initiative

Metro Vancouver is installing back-up power in several wastewater system pump stations to ensure they will operate during a power outage. This will help to avoid pump station overflows (where untreated water is released to the environment) and protect aquatic life. It also improves worker safety for electrical maintenance of the stations.

The first four stations are in Vancouver, near the harbour. They are named after close-by streets or icons: Columbia, Harbour, Chilco and Jervis Pump Stations. Subsequent stations identified for this upgrade include the Kent and Hudson Pump Stations in Vancouver, and the Willingdon Pump Station in Burnaby. Pump stations ensure that wastewater is conveyed to a Liquid Waste Treatment Plant.

This initiative is currently in design, and the back-up power should be operational by 2019. Metro Vancouver has been working with the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Parks Board on this initiative and neighbouring residents will be invited to provide feedback as the design work advances.

http://heimat-deutschland.info/metroupdate/PublishingImages/issue26-WasterwaterPumpStationPowerBackup.jpg2016-11-30T08:00:00ZGP0|#b009e37c-8145-4c7a-9df2-56f99def4f75;L0|#0b009e37c-8145-4c7a-9df2-56f99def4f75|Issue 26;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

In a power outage, we usually think about finding flashlights and drum up ideas for a cold supper. But Metro Vancouver's engineers think about how their facilities will operate. In this case, find out about some of our key liquid waste pump stations.

0
