In the case of Burns Bog, accelerated restoration of ecologically compromised areas may reduce methane emissions and restore the bog's ability to sequester (or 'store') carbon.

Historically, some of the land was used for peat mining and farming which disrupted natural processes. Some of these disturbed sites are now slowly recovering from those set-backs. Just as bogs take centuries to form, so too can damaged areas take centuries to recover. Restoration work is part of the 100 year vision and management plan for the area.

Starting this fall Metro Vancouver and researchers will establish plots within damaged areas of the bog and collect baseline biophysical data such as plant cover, plant health, water levels and water chemistry characteristics. The team will apply a variety of approaches to restoring plots, and then evaluate them for their potential to restore larger areas.

Project partners include the Corporation of Delta and academic research teams. Results can be shared with other municipalities managing wetlands affected by human activities.

Find out more about establishing and managing the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area.

http://heimat-deutschland.info/metroupdate/PublishingImages/issue14-burnsbog.jpg2015-10-30T07:00:00ZGP0|#9ce34380-a759-4725-91fd-ec3f80a85606;L0|#09ce34380-a759-4725-91fd-ec3f80a85606|Issue 14;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

Just as bogs take centuries to form, so too can damaged areas take centuries to recover.
