To accommodate growth, the facility is undergoing a major expansion which will increase its capacity to service a population of 1.5 million people.

Every time we use water, whether it’s flushing the toilet, taking a shower, and running the dishwasher or washing machine, we produce wastewater. This Plant treats about 175 billion litres of wastewater annually, enough to fill 50,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

This Stage 5 expansion project is in the design phase, and will include additional trickling filters, solids contact tanks, and secondary clarifiers. The geotechnical ground improvement work which is currently underway includes installation of about 9,000 stone columns at an average of 30 metres deep and relocation of existing major utilities, and is scheduled to be completed in early 2016. The first phase of construction is then expected to begin, and overall project completion is expected in 2020.

The current preliminary estimated project cost is $550 million.

http://heimat-deutschland.info/metroupdate/PublishingImages/issue10-annacis.jpg2015-06-25T07:00:00ZGP0|#75fdcc10-e11d-42e1-a77f-bfdf4cb451db;L0|#075fdcc10-e11d-42e1-a77f-bfdf4cb451db|Issue 10;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

The Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, near the Alex Fraser bridge, will treat the wastewater for about 1.5 million people.

This expansion project is in the design phase, with construction expected to be complete in 2020.
