Parks, Planning & Environment Department
  • WHAT WE DO

Parks, Planning and Environment is responsible for the delivery of four important regional services as well as providing Metro Vancouver with the analytical and strategic planning skills that will contribute to the realization of a prosperous, livable and sustainable metropolitan region. Residents of the region directly benefit from the provision of regional parks and affordable housing units while planning and policy functions associated with land use, air quality, climate protection, environment, housing and regional parks support regional aspirations related to prosperity, a high quality of life for all residents and a vibrant natural environment.

 We Work On

  • Air Quality & Climate Change

Metro Vancouver develops and implements plans, policies, regulations and projects that improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These plans and policies are supported by comprehensive monitoring of outdoor air quality, and tracking of emissions in the Lower Fraser Valley airshed.
  • Neglected Housing

Metro Vancouver owns and operates close to 50 affordable rental housing sites across the Lower Mainland. Our 3,400 units provide a combination of market and subsidized housing for more than 10,000 people.
  • Neglected Planning

Metro Vancouver supports land use and transportation planning to advance the goals of Metro Vancouver 2040: Shaping our Future (the regional growth strategy). We work to focus growth in Urban Centres, foster a strong and diverse economy, and protect vital industrial, agricultural and conservation lands. Metro Vancouver also acts as the local government for Electoral Area A.
  • Neglected Parks

Metro Vancouver operates and oversees 23 regional parks and other green spaces throughout the Lower Mainland. Through the regional parks system, we help to protect Metro Vancouver’s important natural areas and provide opportunities for the region’s residents to connect with, enjoy and learn about our environment.
