  • WHAT WE DO

Our region generates over 1 billion litres of wastewater every day and is continuing to grow. Metro Vancouver receives wastewater (or sewage) from municipal collection systems and carries it to regional wastewater treatment plants. Wastewater is treated before it is discharged to the lower Fraser River, Burrard Inlet or Georgia Straight.

Our priority is to protect public health and the environment by ensuring that wastewater is moved safely from houses and buildings, maintaining healthy waterways and recovering resources from wastewater.

 We Work On

  • Wastewater Collection

We operate and maintain a network of 530 km of trunk sewers and 33 sewage pumping stations that receives wastewater from municipalities and carries it to treatment plants.
  • Innovative Ways to Use Wastewater

As wastewater is collected and treated, resources are extracted and used to generate electricity, heat for buildings and treatment plants, and made into a fertilizer substitute. Wastewater treatment plants also re-use water captured during the treatment process.
  • Wastewater Treatment

Five regional wastewater treatment plants process the 1 billion litres of wastewater generated every day by residents, businesses and industries to remove materials that can harm the environment.
  • Stormwater and Drainage

Around certain rivers and streams, we manage drainage to help reduce flooding and improve environmental health. We also work with municipalities to manage the impact of stormwater.
  • Environmental Monitoring

Treated wastewater is discharged to the lower Fraser River, Burrard Inlet or Georgia Strait. We test wastewater before and after treatment and monitor water quality in the region.
  • Preventing Problems in the Pipes

Grease, disposable wipes, chemicals and other products cause problems for the sewers and the treatment system. Find out what you can do to help to keep our systems running well and protect the environment.
  • Support for Businesses, Industry and Institutions

Businesses, industry and institutions put unique demands on our wastewater treatment system. Find out about services, issues, best practices and regulations for your operation.
